Dark Auction is a mystery adventure set in 1981 within the eerie confines of an old European castle, where players follow the story of eighteen-year-old Noah Crawford. Haunted by his mother’s abandonment and grappling with his father Leonard’s obsession with a mysterious figure known as “Dictator X,” Noah finds himself drawn into a shadowy auction after Leonard suddenly disappears upon attending it. Determined to uncover the truth and bring his father home, Noah becomes entangled with other enigmatic guests trapped inside the castle, each harboring their own secrets and traumas. The narrative, penned by Rika Suzuki—known for her work on Another Code and Hotel Dusk—unfolds through rich dialogue and intricate character interactions, enhanced by Kohske’s distinctive character designs and a haunting score from composers Yuko Komiyama and Tsukasa Masuko. Gameplay centers on exploration and deduction, allowing players to freely roam the castle’s rooms and floors to gather clues and converse with other participants. Information collected is stored in a unique Word Cloud system, which players use to piece together mysteries during the titular auctions. Unlike traditional bids, these auctions take place by offering memories through a device called EPO, where players must carefully reconstruct fragmented or distorted recollections affected by trauma and secrets. Acting as a supporter to the other guests, Noah’s role is to correct these memories to succeed in the auctions and reveal the hidden truths behind each exhibit.
