Banquet for Fools is a party-based open-world adventure set on the mysterious island of Invimona, where the resilient Vollings strive to carve out a new life amid a land steeped in ancient pagan traditions and lingering curses. After a successful effort to cultivate a rare and valuable spice, the island’s settlers face a baffling disappearance of an entire farmstead’s inhabitants. As a guard in the service of a local lord, you assemble a team of four companions—each uniquely generated with distinct skills and personalities—to investigate this unsettling mystery. Exploration plays a key role as you navigate rivers and coastlines with the help of a pack-boro, interact with diverse NPCs including farmers, artisans, and enigmatic Gadaars, and unravel the island’s secrets without the aid of quest logs or compasses, relying instead on scrolls and careful observation. The gameplay combines tactical beat-em-up combat with deep character progression and customization. Battles are dynamic, allowing you to control one guard at a time while the others act autonomously, with options to switch leaders or coordinate powerful combo attacks. Characters develop through skill usage and experience, specializing in areas like melee weapons, pagan magic, animal binding, music, or rogue abilities, each offering strategic choices in and out of combat. The world’s pagan gods can be petitioned for blessings and unique holy items, requiring quests and offerings that shape your party’s spiritual power. Additionally, the game features a nuanced approach to law enforcement and morality, where your decisions to arrest, stun, or kill criminals affect your standing with local communities and the eerie Exile Island prison.
