Benign Land is a surreal walking simulator that takes players on a meditative exploration of Ireland’s layered past, blending mythology, history, and collective memory into a haunting, dreamlike experience. Through 17 evocative scenes, the game guides you across landscapes that evoke Ireland’s spiritual and political evolution—from ancient pagan sites and the rise of Christianity to the Irish Famine and the troubled legacy of places like the Maze Prison. Rather than following a conventional narrative, Benign Land weaves a cryptic, symbolic story rich in metaphor and visual poetry, encouraging players to immerse themselves in its abstract atmosphere and reflect on the country’s complex cultural identity. Designed as a short, 30-45 minute journey, Benign Land offers a slow, contemplative pace with no combat or puzzles, focusing instead on exploration and mood. Players move through portals that transport them between chapters, experiencing the cyclical nature of the narrative as it shifts between history, myth, and hallucination. The experience is further deepened by an original soundtrack from Belfast sound artist John D’Arcy, whose music complements the game’s misty vistas and ethereal imagery. Originally created as an interactive art installation, this unique title blurs the line between game and artwork, inviting players to engage with it as a poetic meditation on Ireland’s spiritual and social scars rather than a traditional game with objectives.
