Combat Mission Cold War is a tactical wargame set during the tense early years of the Cold War, specifically between 1979 and 1982—a period when NATO and Warsaw Pact forces began transitioning from traditional industrial warfare toward more modern, digitized combat. The game explores a series of “what if” scenarios focused on the strategic Fulda Gap in West Germany, a hotspot for potential conflict between US and Soviet forces. Players can experience historically grounded battles using detailed and accurate representations of forces, vehicles, and weaponry from the era, such as M-60 and M1 tanks on the American side, and T-64 and T-80 tanks for the Soviets. The gameplay offers a sandbox environment where tactical experimentation is encouraged, allowing players to test different units and doctrines as they might have evolved during this critical phase of military innovation. The game features 15 standalone scenarios and three full-length campaigns that immerse players in both American and Soviet perspectives. One campaign recreates the US National Training Center’s early days, simulating the adoption of the revolutionary AirLand Battle doctrine against a formidable Soviet Opposing Force. Another campaign places players in command of US forces defending the southern Fulda Corridor, while the Soviet campaign follows the “Ride of the 120th Motor Rifle Regiment” in a fictional invasion, bringing to life battles on historically inspired maps. Combat Mission Cold War also integrates advanced gameplay elements such as electronic warfare and improved cluster munitions, reflecting the growing influence of technology on the battlefield.
