Dead Monarchy is a challenging open-world tactical RPG set in a gritty low-fantasy world where you lead a medieval mercenary company through a sprawling region known as the Midlands. As the captain, you manage your band of fighters, taking on contracts, exploring dangerous locations like caves, ruins, and abandoned fortresses, and engaging in deep turn-based combat. The game emphasizes careful strategy and positioning, featuring a complex system that includes elevation effects, attacks of opportunity, ranged and melee combat, and flanking mechanics. With up to 18 mercenaries on the battlefield, each battle demands thoughtful planning and adaptation to the unique combat styles of ten rival factions. Progression in Dead Monarchy revolves around recruiting and training your mercenaries, each with their own backgrounds and weapon proficiencies that influence their fighting style. Players can customize their fighters extensively, choosing from over 180 perks and abilities and equipping them with historically inspired armor, helmets, and a wide variety of weapons. The game also features permanent death for your mercenaries, raising the stakes in every encounter. Beyond mercenary contracts, you can pursue the path of arena champion, battling increasingly formidable foes across five arenas to rise through the ranks. The open-world sandbox encourages freedom of play, whether hunting outlaws, trading, crafting gear, or following the main story. Developed over six years by solo developer Kevin Zhang, Dead Monarchy offers a deep and immersive experience for those who enjoy tactical depth and unforgiving gameplay.
