Game Overview
Heartworm is a narrative-driven horror game that follows Sam, a young woman grappling with the loss of her beloved grandfather. Unable to move on, she becomes obsessed with a mysterious online forum promising a way to reunite with him from beyond the grave. This leads her to an eerie, supposedly supernatural house nestled in the mountains, where the lines between reality and the other side begin to blur. The game unfolds as a deeply emotional journey through grief and loss, set against retro-inspired atmospheric environments that evoke the mood of late 90s survival horror classics. Players spend around four to six hours exploring the haunting, pre-rendered and in-game environments, solving classic-style puzzles, and navigating limited combat scenarios using a camera as a unique weapon. The gameplay features a modern control scheme with over-the-shoulder aiming, alongside an option for classic tank controls, allowing fans of old-school horror to tailor their experience. Heartworm also offers optional pixelation and retro visual effects that pay homage to the early 3D console era, enhancing its nostalgic feel. Complemented by a haunting original soundtrack, the game delivers a psychologically-focused narrative that echoes the tone and style of genre staples like Silent Hill and Resident Evil, culminating in multiple possible endings based on player choices.
