Ys IX: Monstrum Nox takes players to the sprawling city of Balduq, a place under the control of the Romun Empire and shrouded in mystery. The story follows the famed adventurer Adol “the Red” Christin, who arrives with his companion Dogi only to be unexpectedly imprisoned. While confined, Adol encounters Aprilis, a woman who transforms him into a Monstrum—one of six individuals endowed with supernatural Gifts. These powers grant unique abilities such as scaling sheer walls or sensing hidden objects, which are essential for navigating the city and confronting the shadowy creatures threatening Balduq from a parallel realm known as the Grimwald Nox. As Adol teams up with the other Monstrum, players uncover the secrets behind their curse and the unrest plaguing the city. Gameplay in Ys IX builds on the series’ signature fast-paced action, combining familiar mechanics like Flash Dodge and Flash Guard with new systems such as Boost Mode and the versatile Gifts. Players can switch between the six Monstrum characters, each offering distinct abilities that influence exploration and combat strategies. The vast urban environment encourages exploration and interaction with townsfolk through various quests, deepening the world’s narrative and providing valuable rewards.
