Set across seven diverse maps with unique terrain and seasonal changes, the game offers a rich, immersive experience where players can discover over 50 animal species, including mythical forest creatures like Bigfoot, while searching for various edible and poisonous mushrooms. Each season grants 100 days to explore, with dynamic weather conditions and day-night cycles that affect gameplay, encouraging players to strategize when to hunt or photograph. As you find mushrooms and capture wildlife on camera, you earn points that help increase your Mushroom Hunter and Photographer levels, unlocking new regions, equipment, and helpful items such as bug spray, first aid kits, and even vehicles like horses and ATVs to traverse the landscape more efficiently. Progression in Morels: The Hunt is driven by exploration, collection, and learning. Players can view and organize their wildlife photos in an in-game photo book, which also saves images to their PC. The game encourages experimentation through features like swimming to photograph fish and an Exploration Mode where you play as an animal, offering a different perspective on the environment.
