Painkiller is a reimagined entry in the classic franchise, plunging players into a dark, gothic world where they must battle relentless hordes of demons and colossal monstrous foes. Set in the eerie realm of Purgatory, the game follows a protagonist sentenced for crimes against Heaven, who is given a chance at redemption by the Voice of the Creator. As a chosen Champion, players embark on a mission to stop the fallen angel Azazel from unleashing his demonic armies upon Earth. Along the way, they face a diverse array of enemies, including uniquely powered demons and the formidable Nephilim, Azazel’s monstrous offspring, as they fight to earn salvation. The gameplay offers fast-paced action with a focus on mobility and combat, allowing players to jump, dash, and hook across expansive biomes filled with richly detailed gothic environments. Players can wield a variety of new and classic Painkiller weapons, enhancing their abilities with tarot cards that provide strategic buffs and can be combined with teammates’ powers in cooperative play. Up to three players can join forces offline or online, choosing from four distinct characters—Ink, Void, Sol, and Roch—each bringing unique perks that affect health, energy, power, and damage. Beyond the main campaign, the game features Rogue Angel Mode, a challenging survival experience set in handcrafted randomized arenas, encouraging teamwork and skillful play as players fight to endure against endless waves of enemies.
