SGS Spain at War is a detailed strategy game that immerses players in the Spanish Civil War, spanning from July 1936 to April 1939. The game unfolds in weekly turns, allowing players to take command of either the Nationalist or Republican forces. As the Nationalists, the challenge lies in deploying the formidable Africa Army units and capturing key cities to force the Republican surrender. Playing as the Republicans requires a more defensive approach, focusing on slowing the enemy’s advance while building the Popular Army to eventually confront the Nationalists’ veteran troops. The game offers a rich historical experience, featuring an extensive roster of units, including Falangist and Carlist militias, Italian aerial squadrons, International Brigades, and various regional forces such as Basque, Asturian, and Catalan units. Iconic equipment like the Soviet T-26 tanks, I-15 and I-16 fighters, and the German Bf 109s of the Kondor Legion further deepen the authenticity. Resource management is a critical element, as players must decide how to allocate industrial capacity to produce new units or replenish damaged ones, with some elite and naval units being irreplaceable. The strategic use of cards introduces variability in reinforcements, economics, diplomacy, politics, popular support, and combat outcomes, adding layers of complexity to each session.
