War Room places you in command of the U.S. Army during a conflict in Afghanistan’s fictional province of Kushan, a sprawling 1000 km² battlefield filled with villages, towns, natural landmarks, and coalition outposts. Drawing inspiration from real events in the Afghanistan War, the game challenges you to secure territory, establish and supply forward operating bases, and carry out patrols to maintain control over the region. Managing your troops carefully is crucial, as soldiers will withdraw under extreme combat conditions and wounded personnel require timely evacuation via MEDEVAC helicopters. Success depends not only on military might but also on protecting civilians and supporting democratic processes by helping to organize safe elections and backing political candidates, making your choices impact the province’s future and leading to different endings. Gameplay revolves around strategic command of hundreds of units, including infantry, specialized forces, and air support assets like attack helicopters, drones, bombers, and strike aircraft. You can coordinate complex operations using an innovative combat preview system that employs military drones with various vision modes—such as thermal and FLIR—to scout enemy positions, designate targets, and call in precise airstrikes. The province is divided into nine districts, each controlled by insurgent cells involved in activities like recruiting fighters, manufacturing IEDs, and smuggling weapons. Clearing supply routes of explosives and disrupting these networks is essential for maintaining your bases and ensuring the flow of reinforcements.
